Shannon West

Staff Reporter

Clay Club is doing a full-day trip to Austin on Saturday. Mud Mermaids meet at the Dunbar Recreation Center at 8 a.m. before driving to Armadillo Clay for a facility tour and shopping. The group will get lunch at Kinda Tropical, then boba at OMG Squee, tour Broad Studios, explore the Cathedral of Junk and head back home, ending at 6:15 p.m.

First, you need to sign up for Clay Club at tinyurl.com/ClayClubSMTXsignup. Then RSVP at tinyurl.com/AustinFieldTripsignup and sign up for the event at partiful.com/e/NohvtzAer80fTATAcGvM?rsvp=true. The cost is $30, or you can do the equivalent in volunteer hours at the studio. SMAL members get 50% off.

I can’t wait to learn and commune with fellow artists.

A Paddlin’ Safari

Dalton Sweat

I have always wanted to do the Texas Water Safari, but perhaps at a slower pace. One of my dreams is to try to do it over a multiple-day trip with preplanned campouts along the way. I think the Jr. Texas Water Safari this weekend may actually make for a fun first leg of that trip. It’s a much more approachable 16 miles instead of the traditional 260.

The race starts at San Marcos City Park and follows the first 16 miles of the Texas Water Safari course, finishing in Staples on the upriver side of the FM 1977 bridge.

Check-in begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, with a race briefing at 8:15 a.m. and the start at 9 a.m. Racers must reach the FM 1979 bridge in Martindale by noon.

The entry fee is $35 per paddler. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17 so get in there quick. Racers as young as 15 may compete without an adult.

Food and drinks will be provided at the finish.

A Birthday Showdown

Colton McWilliams

The oldest bar in San Marcos is celebrating its 49th birthday Friday.

Established in 1977, Showdown has been an iconic staple in downtown San Marcos for decades.

Showdown has garnered a reputation for being one of the best burger joints in town, as well as for its late-night breakfast menu.

Showdown is also a favorite among Texas State alumni, with Southwest Texas memorabilia hanging on the walls of the establishment.

The birthday celebration is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday with drink specials, prize giveaways and the bar’s iconic burgers.

Celebrating one of the longest-running establishments in San Marcos is always cause for celebration, and it’s a well-deserved honor for Showdown.
