Mariachi Águilas de Oro takes root! These students are laying the foundation for what they hope becomes a lasting part of Houston City College.
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — They are studying everything from engineering to business, each following a different path. But these 12 Houston City College students share one thing: a love for mariachi music.
That shared passion brought them together over the summer to build a new mariachi program from the ground up. The ensemble is called Mariachi Águilas de Oro, which translates to Golden Eagles.
“This is to bring students together to celebrate the history and culture of mariachi,” said Dr. Martin Perez, the Dean of Student Success.
Student Cesia Duron performs with the group and told us, “I think mariachi music is a beautiful way to connect to yourself and to others.”
Meet the students of Mariachi Águilas de Oro in the video above, where they share their hopes for the new program.
