The jam-packed ballot is four pages, showing every contest within the county. At the polls, voters will get a ballot that contains the races in their municipality and district.
The midterm elections have races from the federal level all the way to local school districts. San Antonio does not have any municipal races this November, but Converse, Schertz and Windcrest all have city council contests for voters to decide. Voters in Bexar County, along with most Texas counties, will be deciding who will sit on the commissioners court, serve in other county positions and who presides over cases in county courts.
At the federal level, the marquee race is for the U.S. Senate seat of Sen. John Cornyn. Democrat James Talarico, Republican Ken Paxton and Libertarian Ted Brown are vying for the job. Cornyn lost his primary race to Texas Attorney General Paxton in a primary runoff. There is a write-in option for voters who do not wish to vote for any of the three on the ballot.
Several seats in the United States House of Representatives are on this ballot. All the seats that represent portions of Bexar County (and beyond) are up for grabs. Incumbent Democrats are facing challengers in three of the five seats.
District 23, formerly held by Tony Gonzales, who resigned in April, is now sought by Republican Brandon Herrera, Democrat Katy Padilla Stout and Independent Ben Mendoza. Republican Carlos De La Cruz and Democrat Johnny Garcia are battling for the newly drawn District 35.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick are just a couple of the major state office holders facing challengers for their jobs. Other positions on the ballot include attorney general, land commissioner, state comptroller and railroad commissioner. Several state Supreme Court seats, lower state court seats and State Board of Education positions are also on the ballot.
State House and Senate seats are up for grabs, with nearly every house seat contested. Only Democrats Barbara Gervin Hawkins (District 120) and Diego Bernal (District 123) do not have opponents.
Three state Senate Democrat incumbents have challengers: Roland Gutierrez (D) facing off against Marcus Cardenas (R) in District 19, Judith Zaffirini (D) against Julie Dahlberg (R) in District 21 and Jose Menendez (D) against Julian Villarreal (G).
Several area school districts will be asking voters to make some decisions this November, from who will serve on the school board to school bonds or asking for changes to the tax rate. Four Bexar County Districts have voter-approval tax rate elections on the ballot.
Northside ISD is also asking for voter approval on bonds totaling more than $885 million. San Antonio ISD is seeking bond approval for almost $500 million.
Early voting begins on Monday, Oct. 19 and runs through Friday, Oct. 30. Election day is Nov. 3.
