Brace yourself for more traffic headaches this weekend. Another major closure is coming to a San Antonio interstate as part of a $1.5 billion state project.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is shutting down several main lanes on southbound I-35 from Judson Road to O’Connor Road, beginning Friday, September 18, at 9 p.m., according to a media release. Commuters won’t have access to the three right lanes along this stretch on Saturday, September 19, until noon, weather permitting.
Additionally, the off-ramp from southbound I-35 to O’ Connor Road will be closed. Only the left lane will remain open to drivers during this period, likely causing a temporary standstill in the area. Residents traveling near Live Oak and Windcrest could be the most heavily affected by the planned detours.
TxDOT says the closure is needed so that crews can perform bridge cap concrete work along the route.
According to the City of Live Oak, vehicles will be directed to the next available exit at Weidner Road.
“Motorists should expect delays,” a post from the city read.
This closure is part of the larger I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) development. Its primary purpose is to expand approximately 20 miles of I-35 from N. Walters Street to FM 1103 across Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe counties.
“The I-35 NEX Central project, the first of five I-35 NEX projects, has been under construction since June 2022,” TxDOT’s website states. “Construction on the I-35 NEX South Phase 1 project started in the summer of 2024. The anticipated completion date for the Central project is late 2027; the South Phase 1 project completion date is targeted for late 2028. The remainder of the NEX projects, South Phase 2 & 3 as well as North, are currently under design.”
