The closure will affect the northbound lanes between Exit 111 and Kirkwood Road beginning Friday at 9 p.m., according to the City of Sugar Land. Traffic will be detoured to the frontage road at Exit 111 and allowed to re-enter near South Kirkwood Road.
The closure is expected to remain in place until Monday at 5 a.m.
City officials said the work is for essential bridge maintenance and warned drivers to expect delays. Drivers can check current traffic conditions through Sugar Land’s traffic map or Houston TranStar’s live closure map.
“If you’re heading that way this weekend, give yourself some extra time, watch for work crews and, when possible, consider taking another route,” Sugar Land officials said in a Facebook post. “Your future self will thank you.”
The latest closure is separate from the heavier construction Chron previously reported near the Brazos River Bridge, where TxDOT started Phase III work earlier this year. That project shifted traffic patterns as crews worked on repairs tied to erosion near the bridge.
In February, Chron reported that the Brazos River Bridge work was expected to bring heavier northbound congestion starting in March, while the northbound frontage road portion was expected to continue into 2027. A March update warned of another weekend closure between University Boulevard and Riverbrook Drive as Phase III continued.
This weekend’s closure is farther north, but the message for Sugar Land drivers is familiar: plan ahead, expect slower travel and give crews room to work.
