Drivers in San Antonio should prepare for major highway closures this weekend as the Texas Department of Transportation continues work on two billion-dollar highway expansion projects.

TxDOT plans to close all lanes of Interstate 10 at Loop 1604 on the Northeast Side from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, according to a news release.

Both Loop 1604 frontage roads at the interchange also will be closed during that time.

The weekend work is part of TxDOT’s ongoing expansion projects at Loop 1604 and Interstate 10, as well as Interstate 35 and Loop 410.

The Interstate 10 closures are tied to TxDOT’s $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, which will widen the highway from four to 10 lanes across the North Side. The project also includes construction of a $463 million interchange at Loop 1604 and Interstate 10, replacing the cloverleaf design built in the 1980s.

TxDOT also announced the following weekend closures as part of its $3 billion I-35 NEX project, which will expand Interstate 35 from eight to 14 lanes on the Northeast Side:

•    9 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday: The three right lanes of southbound Interstate 35 between Judson Road and O’Connor Road will be closed. The southbound I-35 exit ramp to O’Connor Road also will be closed.

•    9 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday: All eastbound lanes of Loop 410 between Harry Wurzbach Road and Starcrest Drive will be closed.

•    9 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday: The southbound I-35 frontage road south of the Fratt Road entrance ramp will be closed.

•    9 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday: The ramp connecting southbound Interstate 35 to southbound Loop 410 will be closed.

Detours will be posted for all closures.
