SAN ANTONIO – Drivers on the Northeast Side should plan for overnight and nightly closures along southbound I-35 this weekend as work continues on the I-35 Northeast Expansion Program.

The Texas Department of Transportation said the southbound I-35 frontage road south of the Fratt Road entrance ramp to Exit 164B, along with the northbound-to-southbound U-turn at Walzem Road, is expected to be closed from 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, weather permitting.

During that closure, drivers on the southbound I-35 frontage road will be directed to follow detour signs to enter the southbound I-35 mainlanes north of Walzem Road and use the Eisenhauer Road exit ramp to return to the frontage road.

TxDOT said drivers on Walzem Road trying to access southbound I-35, and drivers on northbound I-35 looking to make the U-turn at Walzem Road, will be directed to follow one of two detour options.

Detour option 1 routes drivers to the northbound I-35 frontage road, then to Northeast I-410 Loop, where they will keep left to turn around to the southbound I-35 frontage road. Drivers will then enter the southbound I-35 mainlanes north of Walzem Road and access the southbound I-35 frontage road from the Eisenhauer Road exit.

Detour option 2 directs drivers to follow detour signs on Walzem Road, turn north onto Interchange Parkway, continue to Fratt Road and turn right, then turn right again to enter the southbound I-35 frontage road. Drivers will then enter the southbound I-35 mainlanes north of Walzem Road. Those looking to access the southbound I-35 frontage road will use the Eisenhauer Road exit.

TxDOT also said two ramps at the I-410 South interchange are expected to be closed from 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, weather permitting: the southbound I-35 connector ramp to southbound I-410 South and the southbound I-35 frontage road entrance ramp to southbound I-410 South.

For that closure, TxDOT said travelers on southbound I-35 who want to connect to southbound I-410 South, and those who want to enter southbound I-410 South from the southbound I-35 frontage road, will follow detour signs to the southbound I-35 frontage road to George Beach Avenue. Drivers will use the signalized turnaround at George Beach Avenue to enter the northbound I-35 frontage road, then use the frontage road connector to reach the southbound I-410 South frontage road and take the I-410 South entrance ramp south of Winnco Drive to enter the southbound I-410 South mainlanes.

In addition, TxDOT said the southbound I-35 frontage road south of Walzem Road and the northbound-to-southbound U-turn at Walzem Road are expected to close again as a nightly closure from 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, weather permitting. The detours for that closure are the same as those listed for the Saturday night closure.

TxDOT urged drivers to follow detour signage.
