SAN ANTONIO — Spurs fans brought their Silver & Black spirit to Frost Bank Center Saturday as they auditioned for a spot in the Jackals, the team’s high-energy supporter group founded by Victor Wembanyama.

The group is expanding The Lair — its designated fan section in Sections 114 and 115, from about 75 members last season to 175 this year. The Jackals are known for their loud chants, bold outfits and nonstop energy during Spurs home games.

Tony Gatica said he auditioned because he wants to help create one of the NBA’s toughest home-court environments.

“I want to make San Antonio the hardest place to play in the NBA,” Gatica said. “I want to help the Spurs in any way I can, and I love them so much.”

For Gatica, the experience is about more than cheering during games.

“It’s all about building community. It’s all about building deep relationships,” he said. “This organization means so much to the city, and this city means so much to us.”

Applicants moved through several audition stations Saturday, where organizers evaluated their energy, participation and ability to join in the group’s chants and traditions.

Jackals memberships cost $999 and include admission and parking for eligible Spurs home games. Members are expected to attend at least 75% of eligible games and fully participate in the group’s traditions.

The Spurs’ first home game is scheduled for Oct. 20 against Oklahoma City.
