SAN ANTONIO — Houston Christian rallied to take a fourth-quarter lead but couldn’t hold off Incarnate Word, which won 30-23 in overtime Saturday night at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.

HCU (2-2, 1-1 Southland) trailed 20-10 at halftime but took a 23-20 lead with 5:59 left in the fourth quarter after Maddox Kopp’s 53-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Ryan Wallace. That capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive by the Huskies.

However, the Cardinals (2-1, 1-0) tied the score on Joey Bryson’s 24-yard field goal with 2:24 left in regulation.

In overtime, the Cardinals got the ball first and scored on Emmett Brown’s 10-yard TD run. On the ensuing possession, the Huskies drove to the Cardinals’ 8-yard line. But Kopp threw incomplete on consecutive plays, allowing UIW to improve to 12-0 in the teams’ all-time series.

Wallace and Trayjen Llanas-Wilcox each caught a touchdown pass for HCU, with Cutter Stewart throwing the TD to Llanas-Wilcox. Champ Doziler added 86 yards on 20 carries.

HCU’s next game is a nonconference matchup at 6:30 p.m. Saturday against North Texas in Denton.
