San Antonio is the most popular city in the nation for Gen Z movers, according to a new study.
The Redfin study found that San Antonio gained a net 10,000 Gen Zers in 2024. Two other Lone Star State cities — Austin and Dallas — were also among the Top 10 most popular migration destinations for young adults.
The report from Redfin, a real estate brokerage and online property search platform, considered career opportunities, housing affordability and quality of life that cities offer.
The study found that Gen Z movers are flocking to San Antonio and other cities with “lively social scenes.” Washington, D.C. and Austin took the second and third spots in the ranking, while Dallas landed in fifth place. Nashville, Tenn. took the fourth place spot.
The top migration destinations for millennials are Houston and Dallas, where they can get bigger houses for less money, the study found. Both cities have median home sale prices that are under $450,000.
“Gen Zers are chasing opportunity, while millennials are chasing space,” said Sheharyar Bokhari, a principal economist at Redfin. “Younger adults are gravitating toward cities where they can launch careers and their social lives, while millennials are more focused on places where a paycheck stretches further and buying a home is attainable.”
The study found New York is losing the most members of both generations. The Big Apple had a net outflow of 29,000 Gen Zers and 42,000 millennials in 2024, the Redfin study says.
