“Bob was an American patriot, whose service reflected the very best of our Nation,” – President Donald Trump
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A special honor took place Monday in Corpus Christi, where a downtown post office now bears the name of a World War II hero.

Congressman Michael Cloud introduced the bill to rename the facility, located on Tancahua Street, in memory of the late Captain Robert E. “Bob” Batterson. For those who knew him best, the dedication was about more than a name, it was about remembering the life behind it.
It was a fitting tribute for a man who served both his country and his community with heart. Captain Batterson was a Pearl Harbor survivor and a longtime volunteer aboard the USS Lexington.
Among those in the crowd were veterans, community members, and family including his daughter, Patricia Tagariello.
“Dad would have given anything for this community, and it’s just a wonderful tribute to everyone here,” said Tagariello.
Batterson passed away in 2023 at the age of 102. A true American hero, his service extended well beyond the military. He gave countless hours volunteering and inspiring others to do the same.
Congressman Michael Cloud, who led the effort to rename the post office, said Batterson’s life and legacy continue to serve as an inspiration.
“Captain Batterson meant so much to our community. What we were doing is just trying to enact the will of our community in honoring what a wonderful man, a veteran, someone who served,” Cloud said.
Local postal worker Juan Munoz said it’s an honor to help keep Batterson’s memory alive every day on the job.
“Very few post offices are named after individuals. Corpus Christi is lucky to now have two post offices named after individuals,” said Munoz.
As the new sign was revealed, the moment marked more than just a new name on a building. It stood as a lasting symbol of gratitude from a community Batterson loved and a life that even reached the White House.
“We did have one more presentation for you and it is from President Trump,” said Cloud.

“Bob was an American patriot, whose service reflected the very best of our Nation,” the letter stated. “Melania and I send our best wishes to all those gathered today.”
