Cowboys vs. Commanders: The Matchup

The Cowboys fell victim to a resurgent New York Giants team under first-year coach John Harbaugh in Week 1, suffering a 28-20 loss on “Sunday Night Football.” The Giants marched their way to 29 first downs and 9-of-11 third-down efficiency to run 68 plays to the Cowboys’ 52 while out-gaining Dallas 394 to 244. Dak Prescott threw for 175 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, as the Cowboys trailed early and moved away from their run game to keep it close in the fourth quarter. Dallas attempted just 18 rushes as a team while Prescott aired it out 34 times, with Javonte Williams catching five of those passes out of the backfield and accounting for two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving)

Despite showcasing a resilient effort in Week 1, the Commanders fell just short in a 24-22 season-opening loss to the rival Philadelphia Eagles. Quarterback Jayden Daniels orchestrated g a late scoring drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to Antonio Williams to pull within two points, though the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed at the line of scrimmage. The new-look offense featured bright spots, including a rushing touchdown from Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Daniels connecting with veteran addition Stefon Diggs for a score. Self-inflicted mistakes were a storyline for Washington, as an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty prevented an earlier two-point try, along with a blocked extra point and missed a 53-yard field goal.
