Despite all of the budget issues that led to last week’s historic property tax increase, Harris County is spending an additional $3 million on what are called ‘community safety programs’.

Officials say these programs have driven down crime, but offer no data to back up their claims.

“You have 3 entities that are going to be receiving $3 million dollars, taxpayers are funding these programs and we should know how effective or ineffective they are” said April Aguirre, crime victim advocate with Houston Crime Stoppers.

The three programs are HART, RISE, and the Domestic Violence Prevention and Intervention programs. But the $3 million is actually additional funding and will bring the total funding for these programs up to $14 million a year.

“We have to get real with the fact that taxpayers deserve answers on how Commissioners Court is spending their money” Aguirre told KTRH, “If these programs are so great, show us the numbers. Show us who are these people that you have “helped” with taxpayer funds, and then show us all of those people that you have helped that have later on went on to reoffend.”

County officials acknowledged that raising property taxes will help pay for these programs.
