A shooting and crash involving three vehicles on Loop 610 injured at least three people Sunday night, including the passenger of a Camaro driven by a Harris County detention officer, according to Houston police.
“We’re not sure which vehicles were shooting and which were not,” Houston police Lt. J.P. Horelica told OnScene TV.
A black Camaro, silver Escalade and a white truck were involved in the incident that started around 10:30 p.m. at Ella Boulevard and Loop 610, Horelica said.
The vehicles collided with each other and at some point between Ella and San Felipe on 610, they were involved in a shooting, he said. Officials suspect the incident possibly stemmed from road rage.
The white truck left the scene and police were able to locate it later.
The black Camaro was driven by an armed Harris County detention officer and appeared damaged from a crash as seen in the OnScene TV video. His female passenger was injured and taken to the hospital, Horelica said.
A man in the Escalade was shot once and taken to the hospital in critical condition. A woman in the same vehicle was shot once in the arm and transported to the hospital in stable condition, Horelica said. A 7-year-old child was also in the vehicle. It was not clear if the child was injured.
“The occupants of the truck got out of the vehicle and were involved in a physical altercation just down the road with occupants of the Escalade at some point,” he said. “The driver of the white truck left the incident, leaving his passenger on the scene.”
All involved were cooperating, he said.
The Houston police crime scene unit and major assaults and Harris County internal affair division were investigating.
“This is a big puzzle and we’re trying to put together as many pieces as we can. It is a big scene and very confusing so we don’t have all the facts yet,” Horelica said Sunday night. “We’re asking the public if they have any video or if they witnessed anything to contact the HPD Major Assaults Division or Crimestoppers.”
The detention officer is a two-year employee assigned to the county’s detention services bureau, Harris County Sheriff’s Office Major Tommy Shelton told OnScene TV.
Witnesses can contact the Houston Police Department Major Assault’s Division at 713-308-8800 or Crimestoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
This is a developing story.
