A 15-year-old boy died after shooting himself inside his family’s North Side home, and his stepfather was seriously injured when he tried to move the gun away, police said.

San Antonio police identified the teen as Jesse Balderrama. Police said Balderrama shot himself inside the home on Marchmont Lane after he had returned from being reported missing. His 38-year-old stepfather was also shot after police said he tried to move the gun away from Jesse. The stepfather was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Neighbors said they were shocked and saddened.

“She had blood on her arm, and just fell on the floor,” John Puente said, describing what he saw outside the home Sunday afternoon shortly after the shooting, when he said he saw Jesse’s mother.

Puente said, “I’d never thought it end up this way.”

Neighbors said Jesse had dealt with mental health issues but seemed to be doing better recently. “I would see him, and seemed like he was more upbeat,” Jessica Gephart said.

Puente said, “There were a couple of times where I think he tried to overdose, so I figured something in that nature is going on again.”

A review of San Antonio police calls for service shows officers had been to the same address in February for a reported overdose. Police said they cannot release that report because it involves juveniles.

A GoFundMe for Jesse’s family describes him as someone who was “impossible not to love,” “full of personality,” and having a way of making people smile. The fundraiser also says Jesse was a two-time Junior Olympic champion with a promising future in boxing.

“They haven’t returned back from the hospital. We’re looking out the window waiting for them to get back, so we can support them, in every way we can,” Puente said.

Police said several people were in the home at the time, but not in the room where the shooting happened. Officers recovered a gun from the scene and are working to piece together what happened.
