HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Three former students at The Briarwood School in west Houston are charged with sexual assault of a child following allegations of repeated sexual abuse and harassment involving students at the school.
The defendants are Liam Mischner, 19, and Landon Bennett and Jace Burrell, both 18. The Briarwood School serves students with learning differences, including ADHD and dyslexia.
According to court records, the investigation began after an outcry last April from a 16-year-old sophomore. The student, listed as a witness, described multiple incidents during football and basketball seasons.
Charging documents identify two alleged victims, between the ages of 14 and 17, though investigators believe there may be others who are still too afraid to come forward.
The allegations detail incidents in bathrooms, locker rooms and on the bus while students traveled to athletic games.
According to court records, students were allegedly pinned against walls, stripped of towels in the locker room and subjected to unwanted sexual contact. One alleged victim told investigators the harassment became so persistent that he began changing clothes in his car instead of the locker room.
In another alleged incident, a student was forcefully dragged from a bathroom stall while he was using it. Court records also allege students were subjected to harassment while traveling to games.
The investigation was referred to Houston police after Precinct 5 investigators responded to The Briarwood School on April 21. Investigators spoke with the school’s Dean of Students, who said she had initially been approached by the 16-year-old student.
The Briarwood School said the accused students were removed from campus last spring after the allegations were reported and were not allowed to return.
“We have cooperated fully with law enforcement throughout their investigation and continue to do so,” the school said in a statement.
The school said it has notified its community about the arrests and added that the “safety and wellbeing of our students remain our highest priority.”
Mischner turned himself in and posted bond Monday, according to his attorney, Chris Tritico.
“We went into court and posted bond today,” Tritico told Eyewitness News. “Once we get the offense report from the State, we will be reviewing that with an eye toward the grand jury and if necessary, beyond.”
Bennett has also posted bonds totaling $75,000.
Court records show that Burrell has not yet been arrested.
