HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – With the deadline to register to vote less than two weeks away, election officials are also urging Texans to check whether their registration is on the suspense list.
Harris County’s voter registrar said there are roughly 300,000 voters in the county on the suspense list.
The important message is that those people are still registered voters, and, in most cases, the county just needs them to confirm their address.
So how does someone end up on that list?
Voter registration certificates are mailed out every two years, and if a certificate comes back as undeliverable, for example, because someone moved, their name can be placed on the suspense list.
It can also happen following certain returned jury summons or if a voter doesn’t respond to an address confirmation notice.
Harris County Voter Registrar Annette Ramirez said her office is asking those voters to confirm or update their address.
“But if for some reason you’re unable to update that registration before October 5, then you can still show up at the polls to vote. But when you do that, when the poll worker goes to check you in, they’re going to ask you to complete a statement of residence, to confirm where you live, and then they’re going to go on to let you vote,” said Ramirez.
Being on that list does not automatically stop people from voting.
Ramirez said the easiest thing for people to do is to check their registration status and update their address if necessary.
The deadline for registering to vote is October 5.
