SAN ANTONIO – The Eastside Boys & Girls Club will remain open after the nonprofit secured new community support, reversing plans to pause programs at the clubhouse later this month.
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio announced Sunday that funding from Harvey E. Najim, Valero, the Malú and Carlos Alvarez Family, H-E-B and other donors will allow the Eastside Clubhouse to continue operating in a scaled-back model.
The nonprofit also said the Mays Clubhouse and its in-school programming in San Antonio ISD will remain fully open.
“Our community showed up for the kids of San Antonio, and because of that, we get to keep showing up for them too,” BGCSA CEO Debbie Powell said in a statement.
The announcement reverses an earlier plan to pause Eastside programming beginning September 30 because of financial challenges.

Last week, City Council approved up to $350,000 in funding aimed at helping stabilize the nonprofit’s finances. District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez said $175,000 would initially be available to keep the Eastside club open for three months, with the remaining money tied to certain conditions.

Those conditions included pursuing grants, reworking the organization’s budget, and meeting with East Side residents and community partners to create a long-term vision for the clubhouse.
The Eastside clubhouse will relaunch with a scaled-back operating model and a new Community Voice Collaborative, which the organization said will help shape its future programming and direction.
BGCSA said some positions were eliminated as part of the operational changes. The nonprofit is partnering with Tri-Starr Talent to help affected employees find new jobs.
