CALEDONIA, Minn. (KTTC) – County leaders passed a resolution this week seeking disaster assistance after heavy rain and severe weather swept through the area over the weekend.
County leaders hope the declaration will bring state aid to the area.
Commissioner Cindy Wright said the storms caused damage to roadways and parks and flooded basements and farmers’ fields.
Wright, whose district was hit by the storms, said the county saw up to 9 inches of rain and standing water in some areas.
Wright said the resolution allows the county to request state funding to compensate smaller communities for the damages.
“It [the rain] causes a lot of damage into the area. So not only to the infrastructure, but also to fields and just makes it dangerous for passing,” Wright explained. “So, we have to have some funding to make sure that we get that remedied or corrected and try to get ready for the next round of storms.”
The Houston County sheriff, Brian Swedberg, said the resolution lends support to smaller communities as they clean up and repair damages.
“The resolution really helps out the townships and the other entities with recouping their expenses for repairing the roads or whatever they need to repair because it does get quite a bit expensive,” Swedberg said.
The resolution will now go to Gov. Tim Walz’s desk for approval.
