LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Gema Folklorico is an organization that has been making a change in the Lubbock area, sharing traditional Mexican dance with the community.
Alex Barron is the co-director of the organization. He said the group performs traditional dances from Mexico.
“It’s just traditional dances from Mexico. Everything that you see on stage, that’s how they used to dance at one point or another in Mexico,” Barron said.
Barron said he wants everyone to experience ballet folklorico, whether they are in the audience or on the stage.
“I mean, the Mexican culture is very loud, very lively. It’s a beautiful art form. I like how diverse it is. And there’s a different style of dance for each state,” Barron said.
Colorful outfits highlight regional styles
Along with the sound of the grito and tap shoes, the colorful outfits worn by each dancer stand out.
Arika Cordova is a dancer with the organization. She said every region of Mexico has its own dance and dress style.
“So every region has a different type of dance and dress. So this one is Sinaloa, so it’s beautiful, dramatic turns, but every region is different depending on the dress as well,” Cordova said.
Cordova said she did not have the opportunity to embrace her heritage at a young age while growing up.
“I really think it’s pretty nice to have these showcases and express our culture out to people that may not know what ballet folklorico is,” Cordova said.
Cordova wants everyone who may feel far from their roots to know they can always come back.
