SAN ANTONIO – Six water main breaks have happened on Loy Drive since 2021, and one woman who lives there says she is tired of a problem that keeps coming back.
Jovonne Gonzales said the breaks have become part of her daily routine.
“Every morning I go out and look for water main breaks, that’s part of my normal routine,” she said.
Most of the breaks have happened down the road, but the one over the weekend was in Gonzales’ front yard, and the water almost reached her foundation.
“Just about once a year for the last five, now six years, we’ve had water main breaks here in almost the same location,” Gonzales said. “Our street is not even a half mile long, so I feel like that’s an excessive amount.”
“The biggest inconvenience was I had to change all my plans for the day,” she said.
Gonzales said she filed a public records request with the San Antonio Water System but did not get the answer she was looking for.
“In their opinion they felt like it was not an excessive amount, once a year for the last six years,” she said. “I don’t think they’re doing anything on it, to consider this a troubled area.”
In response to questions from KSAT, SAWS said the clay soils beneath the Hillcrest Drive and Loy Drive area create a challenging environment for underground water infrastructure. The utility said its records show Loy Drive has experienced water main breaks during recent drought years.
SAWS also provided a map of its future water main projects, which it said depend on City Council approving its rates in October.
