A 15-year-old boy was killed in a shooting incident just outside Westfield High School in Spring ISD, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on Tuesday. A search is underway for the perpetrator.

As of Tuesday afternoon, investigators had few details beyond the killing itself. Around 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, law enforcement began responding to calls that a boy had been shot. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sadly, the teen male was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Our condolences go out to the family.

Gonzalez said he could not confirm whether the perpetrator was a student, nor did he have a description of any suspect or suspects. He said it was not clear what led up to the shooting.

In a post on social media, Spring ISD confirmed the victim was a Westfield High School student. The district will increase its law enforcement presence throughout the district.

“There are simply no words that can ease the pain of losing a young life,” the post reads. “On behalf of the entire Spring ISD family, we extend our deepest sympathies to the student’s family and loved ones, as well as the friends, classmates, teachers and staff members who are grieving this tremendous loss. During this incredibly difficult time, we ask our community to keep this family in your thoughts and to respect their privacy as they grieve.”

Despite the active search, Gonzalez said there was no active threat to students or families in the area north of Houston. The shooting took place after most students had been let out of the school, and it happened on a sidewalk outside the campus property.

“We have a lot of resources out there,” Gonzalez said in a press briefing, livestreamed by Fox 26. “We have many resources committed to this investigation, and we’re going to do everything possible as we always do to make sure that we support the community and the family, but at the same time that we continue to hunt down who is responsible for this tragic incident.”

Gonzalez said his office has been in communication with Spring ISD Superintendent Kregg Cuellar.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is working alongside Spring ISD and the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s office.
