HEREFORD, Texas (KVII) — A Hereford ISD junior high football player is awake and talking after being airlifted to Lubbock following an injury during Tuesday night’s game against Canyon West Plains.

Superintendent Dr. Ralph Carter said the student-athlete became unconscious at the end of the game.

As of 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, the student had been extubated and taken off sedation. He was awake, following commands and talking, and was expected to remain under observation for at least 24 hours.

Coach Murphy Henry said in a Facebook post that CT scans were clear and the player did not have a brain bleed.

The district thanked medical personnel and first responders for their care, as well as the Hereford and West Plains communities for their support.

“We ask that everyone continue to keep our student and his family in their thoughts and prayers as he continues to recover,” Carter said.
