All lanes of U.S. 287 in Fort Worth are closed Wednesday evening following a fatal crash, police said.
Fort Worth police responded to the crash around 6 p.m. in the 3500 block of Martin Luther King Freeway, police said in a statement.
A garbage truck exited the highway and struck several supporting pillars of the bridge over Erath Street, police said. The driver was thrown from the truck and died at the scene. A passenger was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
Because of the crash underneath the overpass, all southbound lanes of 287 remain closed at Erath Street, police said at about 8 p.m.
All northbound traffic is detoured at the Wilbarger Street exit while southbound traffic is detoured at Berry Street and Vaughn Boulevard. The main lanes will remain closed overnight, the Texas Department of Transportation said in a social media post.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
