Continuous road closures are expected following a fatal collision on U.S. Highway 287 Wednesday evening, which left one dead and one seriously injured.

Fort Worth police said all main lanes of U.S. 287 at Erath Street will be closed for at least seven to 10 days to evaluate the damage of an overpass bridge column.

The Texas Department of Transportation traffic cameras detected the collision Wednesday evening at 6:47 p.m. According to Fort Worth police, a garbage truck with two passengers struck several supporting pillars for the overpass while attempting to exit. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene, but the passenger was transported to the hospital in serious condition. Crews worked overnight to clear the damage and announced continuous closures Thursday morning.

Northbound U.S. 287 traffic will detour to the Wilbarger Street exit, and southbound U.S. 287 traffic will detour to Berry Street/Vaughn Boulevard.

Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes and avoid the area while crews attempt to repair the bridge.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced on Thursday, Sept. 24 it will work with the Fort Worth Police Department to conduct a safety investigation into the accident.
