LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Police say one of the biggest issues at the fair is children getting separated from their families in the crowd.
Officer Steven Bergen said parents should pick a recognizable meeting spot in case that happens.
“So if you get separated, depending on the age of the kiddo, make sure if they do understand, be like, hey, maybe the ferris wheel… it’s kind of the easiest thing to see throughout the whole fair… that’s where we’ll meet up,” Bergen said.
Lost child protocol
The fair has worked with Lubbock police for more than a century, eventually developing a lost child protocol. Any child found alone is taken to a building on the southwest corner of the fairgrounds until parents arrive.
Watch for children near vehicles
The fair’s general manager, Jennifer Wallace, said even people without children should be aware of those around them.
“Drive slow. there’s children. They will just jump out in front of you because they’re so excited to get to the ride. So… maybe just go like five,” Wallace said.
Bag policy and valuables
Guests are asked to bring clear bags so workers can see what is coming in. Police also urge guests to hide valuables in their vehicles and lock them.
Drop-offs and safety for teens
Anyone dropping off a child or teen should make sure they are with someone safe and that their phone is fully charged. Officers said they are ready to step in if there are fights or weapons.
“A lot of juveniles in the area… if they do cause a fight or somebody, god forbid, brings a weapon or what have you, we’ll address it. They’ll end up getting arrested, trespassed… whatever the crime is, we’ll address it and take care of it if needed,” Bergen said.
Wallace said officers may be visible, but they are there to protect the fun, not stop it.
“They’re just trying to make sure that everybody’s here to have a good time, which is the whole point of having the fair… Their presence is not so you don’t have fun, but they’re here in case you need something,” Wallace said.
