Houston bar and music venue Black Magic Social Club announced it will close before reopening as a new concept.
Black Magic Social Club became a go-to venue for punk and metal shows after it opened more than four years ago. Along with its $6 beer and shot specials, the bar featured a distinct occult style complete with giant pentagrams and skulls decorating the interior. It welcomed touring acts, bands and burlesque shows. The owners announced on Instagram that September 30 will be the venue’s last day open, but it will reopen on Halloween as La Calavera
“It was a difficult decision, but unfortunately, with our main focus being event-driven, it’s becoming increasingly harder to pay bills, and we felt like it was time to give something back to Magnolia Park,” the Instagram announcement reads.
The post explains that the venue’s new iteration will still feature music, but they will shift focus to serving the neighborhood. Many comments mourned the loss of the metal music venue and also wondered what “focusing on the community” means. Others fear that the satanic imagery and hardcore decor will be replaced or at least turned down significantly.
“Bummer, every original bar in Houston keeps getting closed down or changed. Nothing left but overly fancy places with no character and carbon copy sports bars,” one commenter said.
“What does focus on the community mean?” another asked.
“Really hope “focusing on the neighborhood” doesn’t mean removing the satanic imagery,” another commenter wrote.
Black Magic Social Club did not respond to Chron’s inquiries into the closure of the bar and its impending remodeling and reopening.
The venue’s final show before closing will feature performances by Drunks with Guns, Rusted Shut, Pack Mentality and Grave City.
