Matthew McConaughey has had the kind of Hollywood career that could practically be its own movie. The Texas native broke out in 1993’s Dazed and Confused before becoming one of the biggest rom-com stars of the early 2000s, thanks to movies like The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Then came the career pivot: The Lincoln Lawyer, Magic Mike, Dallas Buyers Club—for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor—and HBO’s True Detective, cementing his reputation as something considerably more than a leading man with good hair.

Now 56, McConaughey has built a sprawling life well beyond Hollywood. He lives in Austin with his wife, model, and entrepreneur Camila Alves, and their three children, Levi, Vida, and Livingston. He’s also an author, a professor at the University of Texas, a co-owner and “Minister of Culture” of Austin FC, a philanthropist, and, with Alves, a co-founder of tequila brand Pantalones.

His business portfolio is nearly as eclectic, with long-running relationships with brands such as Lincoln and Wild Turkey and a newer partnership with men’s fashion label OLYMP. On screen, he’s hardly slowing down. This year, he stars opposite Woody Harrelson in the Apple TV comedy Brothers, while The Rivals of Amziah King adds another recent dramatic role to his resume.

Real estate has been another constant. Over the years, McConaughey has owned properties across Texas, California, and Hawaii, and even added an Airstream trailer to his holdings. Here’s a look inside the actor’s ever-growing property portfolio.

McConaughey started building his real estate portfolio close to home. In 2001, the Texas native and his older brother, Mike, bought a cattle ranch near Mertzon, Texas, for about $500,000. Known as LP Ranch, the property operates as a Black Angus cattle business. McConaughey’s ownership, however, didn’t last. A representative for the actor told TMZ in 2015 that he hadn’t owned LP Ranch since 2011, when he reportedly sold his share to his brother. The ranch remains in the family.

A year after buying his Texas ranch, the Interstellar star made a much more Hollywood move. In 2002, he paid about $2.08 million for a four-bedroom Spanish-style hacienda in Los Angeles. Built in 1978, the roughly 4,300-square-foot house had a double-height entry, eat-in kitchen, five bathrooms, two fireplaces, a walk-in closet, steam shower, and French doors opening onto a balcony. Outside, there was a pool, koi pond, sauna, outdoor shower, and fire pit.

But McConaughey didn’t stop with one house. In 2003, he picked up the neighboring three-bedroom property for $1.3 million. Then, in 2004, he added a two-bedroom house for another $1.3 million, turning the three properties into one mini compound, records show.

The actor even gave fans a peek inside the main house on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2006. That same year, he put all three properties on the market separately. The two-bedroom sold for $1.5 million, the three-bedroom fetched $1.49 million, and the main four-bedroom house eventually sold for $3.2 million in January 2007.

Airstream Trailer

McConaughey’s real estate history gets a little more unconventional with an Airstream. He bought the 28-foot trailer in 2004 and, by 2008, was showing it off in the pages of Architectural Digest. He dubbed the customized mobile home “the canoe”, and it was less camping trailer and more tiny, highly functional retreat, with a banquette, custom table, kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping nook. The bed was positioned beneath a window so McConaughey could wake up looking out at whatever scenery happened to be outside that day. “If it looks good but it’s not functional, then it’s not worth anything,” he told AD. The Airstream was typically parked at Malibu’s Paradise Cove Mobile Home Park, the famously upscale trailer park where some homes have sold for millions.

In 2007, McConaughey traded his Hollywood Hills compound for a much more substantial Malibu setup. The Lost Bus actor paid just over $10 million in an off-market deal for a home on Point Dume, set on a little more than an acre. The 1949 house measured roughly 3,500 square feet and had four bedrooms and three bathrooms when he bought it. McConaughey and his family later extensively remodeled the property, which sat behind gates at the end of a long, winding driveway.

By the time he sold it in 2020, McConaughey was married to Alves and had three children. The longtime family home traded hands for nearly $14.8 million, with Oscar-winning filmmaker Phil Lord, known for films including The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, as the buyer.

Austin, Texas

McConaughey eventually shifted his center of gravity back to Texas. In 2012, he bought a sprawling Spanish-style estate on Lake Austin, although the final sale price was never made public. The house was already plenty substantial, with about 10,800 square feet of living space, seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, an elevator, a two-island kitchen, and a courtyard with a fountain. There was also a stone guesthouse on the grounds.

The timing was especially fitting. McConaughey and Alves married at the house later that same year, and the property has remained the family’s primary residence. In 2024, McConaughey explained that returning to Texas was something he wanted once he and Alves started a family, saying he wanted their children to experience the kind of upbringing he had growing up there.

The actor added an island escape to the portfolio in December 2020, reportedly paying $7.85 million for a newly built house in the exclusive Kukio Beach and Golf Club community in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The roughly 5,300-square-foot home has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, along with two primary suites, each with its own lanai and outdoor shower. There’s also a wine cellar, media room, office, outdoor kitchen, two pools—including a 66-foot infinity pool—two firepits, and a bocce court. Inside, the house leans into a relaxed island aesthetic, with wide-plank oak floors, custom teak cabinetry, and cedar sliding doors.
