SAN ANTONIO – Tx — Residents in the Fieldstone subdivision are frustrated. They say thieves have been breaking into their mailboxes and steal packages for over 8 months.
Juan Marquez, a board member of the neighborhood’s HOA says they installed cameras to catch the thieves. The cameras slowed the break-ins, but not for long.
“It’s almost like a routine for us to wake up and see videos on our cameras, and just se how many mailboxes they broke into,” Marquez said.
The security cameras captured two men breaking into the mailboxes Friday morning. Another man was captured on video breaking into the mailboxes in May. Marquez says some of the break-ins appear to be inside jobs.
“What we notice the most is how fast they are in and out,” Marquez said. “But some of them, it appears they have a key.”
Another video on the security camera by the mailboxes shows a man appear to insert something in the mailboxes, twist, and then unlock the mailboxes. One neighbor says the mail thieves cashed nearly $6,000 worth of checks and stole her identity.
“I was supposed to apply for my master’s program. Now I can’t because my credit tanked. It’s affecting me across the board because my credit score went down 100 points now that they applied for other credit lines.”
The HOA says they have contacted the postal service attempting to get individual mailboxes installed for each home in the neighborhood. They say they were told individual mailboxes wouldn’t be time-efficient for the mail carriers.
We also reached out to the postal service to ask what they’re doing to address the problem. They told us they are looking into the issue and will get back to us at a later time.
