El Paso’s iconic Scenic Drive is closed after heavy storms that hit the Borderland damaged it.

The well-known road that offers views of most of El Paso and Juárez was closed Friday morning, Sept. 25, in both directions after rain caused severe damage, El Paso Police Department officials said in a Facebook post.

A photo shows a large sinkhole near one rock wall that separates the road from the mountain. The road is closed “until further notice,” police said. They are asking drivers to avoid the area for their safety.

The closure will remain in place indefinitely Friday, while crews assess the affected areas and determine the best approach for repairs, city spokeswoman Laura Cruz-Acosta said. In addition, Scenic Drive and other areas affected by this week’s storms need time to dry out before crews can safely begin repairs.

With additional rain still in the forecast, wet conditions could continue to delay that work, she said.
