Arlington Martin in the driver’s seat

When Aledo was slotted into District 3-6A after moving up from Class 5A Division I, the question was whether or not the program with the most state championships in Texas would continue its historic run through district.

Well, that run ended tonight with a 35-21 loss to Arlington Martin, snapping a 136-game district win streak Aledo had going back nearly 20 years. Martin is also now 5-0 after winning seven games combined the last two seasons and missing the playoffs both times. Javian Jones-Priest leads the team with 541 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns, averaging 6.5 yards per carry with quarterback Chase Devoll tallying 942 yards through the air.

The back-to-back district champions, Arlington Bowie, are 2-0 in district after a 41-35 win over newcomer Granbury and beating Arlington Lamar last week. Bowie gets its shot at Aledo next week before playing Martin on Oct. 16.

Rockwall’s offense is back

Don’t look now, but head coach Trey Brooks has Rockwall’s offense back on track.

After averaging less than 400 yards per game and under 300 yards passing in 2025, Rockwall has the most productive offense in the Dallas area — in terms of yards — averaging 545 yards per game. This year, they’re getting it done with a balanced attack. While only averaging 255 yards passing, running back Kayden Castro has 776 yards on the ground with seven touchdowns. Quarterback Collins Jones threw for 232 yards in a 49-42 win over North Forney and has over 1,277 yards on the season with 18 touchdowns.

Last season, Rockwall scored 40 or more points three times, and through just five games, they’ve already scored more than 40 points four times.

Denton Braswell’s historic start

Who had Denton Braswell as unbeaten through five weeks of the season?

In head coach Justen Evans’ first season, he’s proving why he had such success at Corpus Christi Miller. He has Braswell at 4-0 for the first time in program history. Braswell beat Flower Mound, 37-23, in a game that gave Braswell the upper hand in the District 5-6A race, now tied for first with Lewisville. Both teams were unbeaten heading into the matchup.

Next week is a big-time clash against rival Denton Guyer.

Lovejoy is starting to round into shape

Todd Dodge wasn’t going to stay down for long.

After going 6-5 last year — only the fourth time since 2000 that Dodge has won single-digit games — Lovejoy is 5-0 after an impressive 38-35 win over Colleyville Heritage. The team also had a nondistrict win over Fort Worth All Saints last week. Quarterback Nixon Slaughter’s 1,430 yards and 15 touchdowns have led the offense, with Coleman Reaugh (730 receiving yards) as his primary target. Slaughter ranks fourth among Class 5A passing leaders in the area. Reaugh leads all 5A receivers in yards.

Right now, District 3-5A Division II is taking shape with Lovejoy tied with Argyle and Nevada Community, all at 1-0.

Top defenses in the area

Coppell quarterback Carter Zingelmann gets a lot of attention, and rightfully so, but Coppell’s defense is putting in a lot of work so far this season. So far, Waxahachie is the only team to score more than 14 against them, and they’re also holding teams to just 232 yards of total offense per game.

In Class 5A, Frisco’s defense is allowing less than 10 points per game so far and has allowed just one touchdown the last two weeks. They’ll face their toughest challenge yet next week in Anna, which boasts one of the top offenses in the area with over 445 yards per game and averaging 48 points.
