HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man was killed in a crash overnight after attempting to run across the East Freeway, according to Houston police.

The Houston Police Department said officers responded to the crash on IH-10 near Mercury Drive on Saturday evening, just before midnight.

Authorities said the pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in the eastbound lanes. Officials said the driver showed no signs of impairment and stayed on scene, cooperating with law enforcement.

According to investigators, officers found a disabled vehicle on the roadway and said they believe the driver ran out of gas, prompting him to cross the freeway to get gas for the car. Officials did not immediately identify the victim.

HPD said if your car breaks down, call 911 for help and don’t cross any freeways.

Officials said IH-10 was shut down for several hours due to the crash and its subsequent investigation.

HPD said a separate vehicle hit an officer in a patrol car during the investigation. Authorities said the officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
