Dallas Mavericks forward Santi Aldama has been a limited participant through the first two days of training camp, according to head coach Dusty May.
“He’s been limited and to be honest with me and the medical, they just say who can go and that’s who we play in practice around that day,” May said after Sunday’s practice. “He’s been limited with something that happened before. He is working out. It’s not as if he’s out, out, but there are some limitations.”
“I’m working on it,” Aldama said. “It’s been a long summer in that sense. I’m working every day and feeling better every day so I’m excited to get back out there.”
May said Sunday that Aldama could serve as a “heck of a stretch five,” but the strategy creates problems when opposing teams put smaller defenders on him.
“He gives us a different dimension if we want to go with an elite shooter lineup,” May said. “But Santi’s not just a shooter. He can read a closeout. He’s learned to play against perimeter guys. Driving, getting into the paint, can finish over them. Those will be one of the many challenges and the pieces we have to put together if we’re going to be really good.”
