SAN ANTONIO – A motorcyclist was critically injured early Monday after he was thrown from his bike before the motorcycle continued down an exit ramp and crashed into a San Antonio Police Department substation.

The crash happened just before 12:30 a.m. near South Frio Street and Durango Boulevard.

Police said the 50-year-old rider was traveling at a high rate of speed when he hit a wall along the exit ramp. The impact threw him from the motorcycle and over the wall, landing in a grassy area behind a nearby fire station.

The motorcycle continued down the ramp without him, crossed Frio Street and slammed into the side of SAPD’s Central Substation. An officer arriving at the substation spotted the crashed motorcycle but could not find the rider nearby.

Firefighters searched the area and eventually found the man behind the fire station.

He was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in critical condition.
