Two candidates are vying for Place 7 on the board of trustees for the Harris County Department of Education in the upcoming Nov. 3 election.

Meet the candidates

Democratic incumbent Silky Joshi-Malik will face Republican challenger Denise Dick in the race for Place 7. Per the HCDE website, the board establishes policies governing the operation of the HCDE and elects the county superintendent as its chief executive officer.

The HCDE board is made up of seven members, including three at-large positions. Place 7 is an at-large position, meaning it represents the entire county as opposed to a specific precinct.

Some context

Regular meetings of the HCDE board are typically held on the third Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. at 6300 Irvington Blvd., Room 401, Houston.

Place 5, another at-large position, will also be up for election Nov. 3. Democratic incumbent Erica Davis will face Republican challenger Sartaj Bal in that race.
