In 2025, a wave of closures hit Taco Cabana locations around San Antonio, a phenomenon that the company described as a “strategic decision” when we reached out for comment. A year later, several of those shuttered spaces remain empty while others appear to be starting a new chapter.

The Taco Cabana that once operated near the corner of Broadway and Mulberry is still vacant, but property records from October 28, 2025 show the property is owned by The DoSeum. Just a few miles north, the Taco Cabana on Austin Highway near the Target is also no longer in service, and it appears to be for lease, based on a listing from SRS Real Estate Partners.

Construction is underway at the former Taco Cabana at 6040 Bandera, making way for a new Bojangles restaurant. When MySA checked on the property, it was still under renovation, and a banner for the new Bojangles was posted outside. Another ex-Taco Cabana on Thousand Oaks was transformed into a Chinese restaurant. Duck & Dumpling, in 2025.

Over in the Medical Center, Taco Cabana locations at 8516 Fredericksburg Road and 2403 Babcock Road are without new tenants. The latter appears to be a popular spot for unhoused visitors, as there were signs of life outside of the building, like a mattress around the back of the property and a number of garbage bags and other belongings were scattered around the premises.

Lastly, the Taco Cabana at 1633 SW Military Drive, which reportedly closed in 2025, is still looking for someone new to take over the property, as it is listed for lease on LoopNet, an online commercial real estate marketplace.
