Two Houston Police Department officers shot and killed a man Monday night after he allegedly attempted to harm a K-9 unit, according to police chief Noe Diaz.

Speaking at a press conference after the shooting, Diaz said the man was armed at the time of the shooting and allegedly “made a motion to injure the dog.” Police did not provide details regarding what weapon the man allegedly had.

The shooting occurred at a Houston-area dog daycare in the 9600 block of Yupondale Drive, where the man was allegedly employed. Police have not publicly identified the man, but Diaz said he had an active warrant for his arrest.

“Two of our units went in. … They went in, and they tried to negotiate with the person,” Diaz said. “As they turned the corner inside the room, the suspect popped up with a weapon. Several calls to put the weapon down were asked. Instructions were given to the suspect. The suspect did not comply.”

Diaz said the man was wanted for indecency with a child and that police had been surveilling him for hours before attempting to arrest him.

Diaz said the officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras, and the business where the shooting took place had surveillance cameras.

“Those [videos] will be released within the time of the 30-day [policy],” Diaz said. “The investigation will be mirrored with the district attorney’s office, which is typical procedure here, and our internal affairs will go through the process as well.”

According to police, no one else was injured, and the K-9 unit was uninjured but would be checked for injuries regardless.
