LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Light to moderate rain showers have already spread into the region Tuesday morning, marking the first of multiple rounds of precipitation expected over the next two days. The first round of showers on the Caprock will be relatively light, followed by a brief lull in precipitation during the middle of Tuesday. The second and heavier round of rain and thunderstorms is expected to begin Tuesday evening, most likely after 5 p.m., and continue through Tuesday night.

Strong wind gusts will be the primary hazard, though the atmospheric environment will also support the potential for a weak tornado or two, especially near the Texas-New Mexico state line. The heaviest rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, with some small swaths reaching 3 to 4 inches, are expected along the Texas-New Mexico state line and the southwestern Panhandle. Rainfall totals will be significantly less the farther east you travel from the state line.

A Flood Watch remains in effect for Parmer, Castro, Swisher, Bailey, Lamb, and Cochran Counties. While flooding is certainly possible outside of the watch area, it is most likely in these counties.

Storms will end quickly late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. However, additional showers and storms are possible through Wednesday night.

A slight risk of both severe storms and excessive rainfall encompasses the eastern Rolling Plains Wednesday night, though whether these storms occur over the area or just to the southeast remains somewhat uncertain.
KCBD(KCBD)
For the rest of the week, the forecast trends generally drier and cooler. Most locations are expected to remain dry Thursday and beyond, with highs forecast in the 60s and 70s Thursday and Friday.
