Texas A&M senior, son of Brazoria County Sheriff, dies after heatstroke during training run

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A 21-year-old Texas A&M University senior died Tuesday morning, nearly two weeks after suffering heatstroke during a training run.

Austin Stallman, the son of Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman and Angleton ISD coordinator Jeanna Stallman, died Tuesday morning.

In a statement shared with KBTX, Texas A&M University said:

“It is a tragedy whenever a student or member of our Texas A&M community passes away. Our hearts go out to Austin’s family, friends, classmates and loved ones. We offer our deepest condolences and support during this difficult time,” the university said, adding that counseling and other support services are available to all members of the campus community.

Stallman fell critically ill Sept. 15 while on a 9-mile run in College Station as part of a semester-long tryout for a student group that prepares candidates to become Navy SEALs, The Facts reported.

About halfway through the run, Stallman became disoriented. A fellow runner flagged down a passing vehicle for assistance and contacted Stallman’s father.

According to The Facts, Stallman was hospitalized with heatstroke and rhabdomyolysis, a severe muscle breakdown condition that can cause kidney and other organ failure. He required continuous dialysis and significant blood transfusions as medical teams worked to stabilize his kidneys, liver, and blood clotting.

On Sept. 20, Stallman was taken by medical helicopter from College Station to a hospital in San Antonio for specialized critical care.

Throughout his hospitalization, community members and businesses across Brazoria County held blood drives and prayer gatherings in support of the family. A GoFundMe campaign was also established to help the Stallman family cover medical expenses.

Stallman’s hospitalization came amid other recent heat-related emergency at the university.

On Sept. 15, a Texas A&M football player was transported by ambulance from the Coolidge Football Performance Center to a local hospital for evaluation following a heat-related incident during outdoor practice. Athletic officials said the player was treated quickly, released, and cleared to return to the program.
