FORT WORTH

The Presidio neighborhood off Heritage Trace Parkway finally has a local cafe, bistro and hangout.

And not just any bistro. The new 9 Ounce & Somm — a pun on wine and “sommelier” — has food from a team led by Majid Shavandy, an honored chef from Fort Worth now serving wines in a cozy setting 1 mile west of Interstate 35W at 9577 Harmon Road.

Shavandy is the former co-owner of The Pegasus, one of the region’s top-rated restaurants during its mid-2000s run in the Park Hill neighborhood of Fort Worth.

His wife, Denise Paul Shavandy, is a big hit in Burleson at American Revelry after a stint at Cafe Modern.

Majid Shavandy has been directing college culinary programs and overseeing corporate kitchens, but returned to restaurants after talking with owner Ana Stull.

He describes the wine bistro and cocktail bar as more of a “casual, relaxed gathering place” — a bistro with barstools and couches plus a few regular tables, a corner bar with a “living-room feel” in what is mostly a wasteland of chain restaurants.

The restaurant includes a sprawling patio with a view of the bumper-cars traffic around a Harmon Road traffic circle. There’s also a separate cigar patio.

The food is what you might expect from his and Stull’s Mediterranean and Middle Eastern ancestry: simple hummus and feta dishes; a Persian cucumber-tomato salad; and entrees such as Spanish chicken bravas, Moorish pinchos (chicken skewers) or Lebanese arayas with lamb and beef on naan..

Yes, there’s a steak. It’s a petite filet, served with Spanish manchego-cheese mashed potatoes and romesco sauce.

The decor is all from Stull’s favorite color palette: Dallas Cowboys blue seating, with red napkins and trim for Spain’s “La Roja” national soccer team.

Stull, born into an Air Force family to a mother from Madrid, served 10 years in the military but always had imagined owning a convivial bistro and restaurant, she said.

“This is my very first place — it’s been a dream of mine since my 30s,” she said.

The restaurant had not opened on this visit, but it’s open now for dinner nightly and lunch at 11 weekends.
