Thousands of CPS Energy customers in San Antonio are without power after storms rolled through the area on Thursday, October 1.
A CPS Energy outage map shows that 2,780 customers are currently without power due to 35 active outages as of 2:35 p.m. The two areas with the most widespread outages on the map are the Collins Gardens neighborhood near Highway 90 and I-10, and the South Central neighborhood around Southcross Boulevard and South Flores Street.
On Tuesday, CPS Energy emailed customers that it is prepared for isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy rain starting Wednesday and continuing into the weekend. The utility company stated, “The storms can escalate quickly and could be strong to severe, resulting in flash flooding and wind gusts that could impact our reliability by taking down tree limbs and power lines. Our crews are on standby to respond safely should outages occur, and we ask for your patience as we work in dangerous driving and working conditions.”
The power outages followed the beginning of storms as a slow-moving cold front and tropical moisture brought heavy rain to Central Texas. The National Weather Service had forecast storms moving across the region overnight into Thursday morning and issued a flood watch for much of the area through Friday evening.
Forecasters warned that repeated rounds of rain could bring 2 to 4 inches across the region, with isolated totals up to 8 inches and a risk of flash flooding.
