LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The unbeaten Estacado Matadors will look to close out non-district play with another victory as they host the Andrews Mustangs this evening. The game is airing on KCBD.com and the Streaming App.
The Mats are coming off a 36-23 victory at Pecos, where they had to overcome a halftime deficit in order to win. Their previous wins have come against Lubbock High, Sweetwater, Snyder, and Big Spring.
“I’m just proud of the way they’ve been, performing in practice, and playing together and playing for each other and continuing to get better day in and day out and that’s the goal that we have for them,” said Estacado head coach Eric Ward. “We focus more on the process than anything else, and so we’re more process driven than anything and we set goals for the kids and objectives and so far they’ve been meeting them and when they don’t meet them we also hold them accountable and try to figure out why we didn’t meet the goals that we set for each other and we try to fix it in practice.”
The Mustangs started off 2-0 with victories over Clint and Big Spring, before falling to Snyder and Mineral Wells. Last week, they snapped their losing skid with a 19-7 win over Monahans.
“I think Andrews is a competitive football program, I know they had a coaching change, but I know they’re going to compete at a high level, and so I preach to the boys never underestimate your opponent and the game is to be played,” Ward said. “And so, good is not good enough. We always focus on being great in practice and never think about what happened last, think about what’s happening now and what can we create to build momentum.”
Matadors-Mustangs kickoff at 7 p.m. at Lowrey Field.
