W. A. Meacham Middle School students and teachers are relocating after this week’s heavy rains damaged their Fort Worth school, leaving it unsafe for use.
The district notified families of the change in a letter Friday. According to a statement on the school’s website, safety teams and contractors deemed the “repairs will require several weeks to complete.”
“The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we cannot reopen the building until we are confident that the campus is fully safe and operational,” the statement read.
Meacham officials did not immediately respond to a Friday evening email request for comment on the closure.
Fort Worth saw more than four inches of rain as storms swept through Dallas-Fort Worth on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. The rain left portions of the middle school, which is currently undergoing renovations, “unsafe for occupancy.”
As a result of the damage, officials canceled Monday’s classes for all Meacham students. Meacham teachers and staff will still report to Briscoe Elementary School building for work on Monday. The elementary school currently stands unoccupied after district leadership voted to shutter the campus this summer.
Students will join their teachers at the Briscoe campus starting Tuesday, although it’s unclear how long they’ll remain there. Officials are working to “ensure that learning continues with as little interruption as possible,” with students remaining in their current courses and staying with their same teachers.
