As the workweek wraps up, drivers heading home on Friday, October 2, may want to brace for a delayed start to their weekend festivities. A major wreck has crews shutting down a busy San Antonio highway.
Just before 2:30 p.m. Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation reported a high-severity, major wreck near the intersection of Loop 410 and Espada Road. That’s near Mission Espada and just a couple of miles east of the busy Roosevelt Avenue intersection.
The wreck, which warranted a multi-hour response from first responders, has left crews shutting down the eastbound lanes of Loop 410 near Espada Road. It’s caused a major traffic backup that may only get worse as folks clock out at 5 p.m. and head home on the Southeast Side of San Antonio.
Already, drivers can be seen on traffic cameras lined up. It appears vehicles may be using the grassy median that separates the highway and the frontage road to avoid the backup of emergency vehicles and crews.
It’s unclear how long first responders will be on site or shutting down busy highway lanes. But it’s probably best to avoid the area when leaving the office Friday evening. The congestion is likely to get pretty rough, as another, more minor wreck was reported just a mile or so down Loop 410 near Roosevelt Avenue. That, too, has resulted in another highway lane being blocked.
