A library keypad glows after a student types in their Maverick ID number Sept. 30 at the Central Library. The library is phasing out its keypads while keeping key swipes.
On Monday, the Central Library will remove its number keypads. Students will still be able to use the tap and swipe systems.
Morgan Brickey-Jones, director of community engagement, said the change is part of a security measure to avoid anyone using Mav ID numbers that don’t belong to them. She said all the library branches will also go through the process, but it might not be on the same day.
If students forget their Mav ID, Brickey-Jones said they will need their government-issued photo ID and will be registered as a guest, meaning they will have access to the building but not many of its resources. The only service students will have access to is the computers, but they won’t be able to print off of them.
“If everyone’s coming in with their ID, maybe someone who was typing in and just never had it with them will be able to print something they couldn’t print before, or check out a book or use our creative spaces and services,” she said.
MavExpress will have a pop-up on the first floor of the library from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday to help out any students who don’t have their MavID, library operations director Kevin Schuck said.
The keypads make for longer lines to get into the building due to how long it takes to type one’s number in, students typing their numbers wrong or simply not knowing how to use it, Schuck said.
