Houston residents face trash delays during holidays, city urges use of drop-off centers

  • November 11, 2025

Southeast Houston’s Edgebrook neighborhood has been dealing with mounds of trash littering the area for months, despite scheduled city pickup days.

Residents told KPRC 2’s Deven Clarke that the growing trash problem is not only an eyesore but also a serious health concern.

“This has been here since August, so it’s been like—what, almost four months?” Edgebrook resident Tania Ortega said. “It is very frustrating. It makes us look bad, like we’re the ones that just have a mess, but I mean, as you can see, we keep our grass pretty clean and everything.”

Recent winds and cold fronts have worsened the situation, scattering trash across yards.

Ortega expressed concern for her young child.

“It is very unsanitary,” she said. I have a five-year-old, and he loves playing outside, but he can’t really be out here with the trash.”

Residents confirmed that the city has scheduled trash pickup days, but delays have been frequent.

“It just keeps saying the same thing… Delay, delay, delay,” Ortega said. “Delayed, delayed. And then they’ll be closed. Thanksgiving Day, holidays. So that’s what makes it worse, the holidays, upcoming holidays.”

After months of waiting, the city’s solid waste department acknowledged the delays but did not provide a reason.

Officials said cleanup would begin immediately and should be completed in a few days.

“Yeah, it’s better,” one resident said. “The kids deserve to play around and run, and with all this trash, they can’t really play around much.”

The city encourages residents to use one of six Neighborhood Drop-off Centers to dispose of debris.

They also ask residents to report missed collections by calling 311 or using the mobile app to submit service requests.
