A new ADA transition plan, focused on identifying physical obstacles that make participating in programs inaccessible to residents with disabilities, was presented at the Fort Worth Human Relations Commission’s Sept. 14 meeting.
Erin Eurek of Kimley-Horn presented information about the proposal on Sept. 14. The consulting firm has been assisting Fort Worth with ADA compliance by performing self-evaluation, conducting field data collection, and prioritizing sidewalk and curb-ramp improvements. Public surveys have been taken to collect local residents’ input.
Highlighted elements included sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks and signals.
Sidewalks must provide a space that comfortably accommodates pedestrians between the roadway and adjacent land uses, the presentation read. Some general provisions for sidewalks are pathway width, slope, utilities and trees. Curb ramps are key to accommodating people using mobility devices, such as scooters, walkers and crutches. Curb ramps are typically found at intersections, on-street parking and bus stops. The city will be upgrading older pedestrian push-buttons to accessible pedestrian signals, providing audible and vibrating cues for visually and hearing-impaired residents.
The commission also swore in new members: Saint Rothwell Place 3, Lance Smith Place 6 and Chrystia Johnson Place 11.
The next meeting is Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
