North Side drivers should expect worse-than-usual traffic congestion on Interstate 35 and Loop 410 during nighttime hours this week, as the Texas Department of Transportation plans major closures.

TxDOT says it will close all southbound lanes of I-35 between Retama Parkway and Forum Parkway, north of Loop 1604, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Monday night.

The agency will also close I-35’s southbound lanes between Judson Road and O’Connor Road, near Northeast Methodist Hospital, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

The closures are part of TxDOT’s $3 billion I-35 NEX project, which is expanding the interstate from eight to 14 lanes along the Northeast Side. It is expected to be complete in 2030.

From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. every night through Friday, the agency will close all lanes of eastbound Loop 410, between West Avenue and San Pedro Avenue, west of North Star Mall. The closure is being made for “overhead sign removal and striping work,” TxDOT said. The frontage roads will remain open.

TxDOT will also close all lanes of NW Military Highway at its crossing with Loop 410 between 9 p.m. on Tuesday and 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

From 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday, TxDOT will close the eastbound frontage road for Loop 410, between NW Military Highway and Blanco Road.

The project will realign many of the ramps and frontage roads around the interchange between Loop 410 and U.S. 281, and make improvements to intersections between the roadways and the highways. Neither Loop 410 nor U.S. 281 will see major changes to their main lanes. It is expected to be complete by the end of 2029.
