Lubbock non-profit offers car seat safety classes, free seats for families in need

  • October 6, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas requires any child younger than 8 years old and shorter than four feet nine inches to ride in a properly installed car seat or booster seat.

The Parenting Cottage, located near 50th and Memphis, is helping parents meet that requirement.

Safety classes offered twice monthly

Dianne Milford is project manager at that location.

The Parenting Cottage hosts safety classes twice a month to help parents properly install car seats and let them know if it’s time for a change.

“They’re letting them know how the car seats help their child be safe and how important that is,” Milford said. “The risk of being in an accident and their car and their child being injured is great because there’s so many car accidents here around Lubbock. And so it’s just very important that the children are as safe as possible.”

Free car seats available through assistance program

The Parenting Cottage offers the Car Seat Assistance Program, offering parents who are struggling financially, and soon-to-be parents, one free car seat per child. Parents must take an educational course first.

“And then after they receive that education, then they’re able to leave with the car seat that they came in for,” Milford said. “So each class is about 45 minutes to an hour. And then we can also help them install the car seat in their vehicle if they have their vehicle with them. And if they’re ready to install it, then we’re able to do that. If not, they’re always able to come back and schedule an appointment and we can help them install those car seats for them.”

The class covers installation instructions, how to properly secure a child into their seat, and how to check whether a seat is expired. Parents who do not need a new seat can still sign up for the class to update their car seat knowledge.
