Amid push for voter registration, some UIW students find themselves on ‘suspense’ list

  • October 6, 2026

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Bexar County voters have until the end of Monday to register if they want to cast a ballot in the upcoming election.

Across Bexar County, organizers are making a final push to reach people before the deadline, including on college campuses where many students are registering for the first time.

At the University of the Incarnate Word, students said they’re eager to vote — but some also ran into uncertainty after learning their names were listed as “suspended,” a status that can require voters to confirm or update their address.

Community organizer Haven Rivera said groups like Move Texas, a nonpartisan organization, try to make voter registration easier by meeting students where they are.

“Students are excited,” Rivera said. “They’re ready to vote.”

While KSAT was on campus, organizers guided a handful of students to correct their voter registration after discovering they were on the state’s suspense list.

“Right now there’s a lot of anxiety surfacing what that means and being on the suspense list,” Rivera said. “It doesn’t mean that you cannot vote. It just means that the elections office was not able to verify your address.”

Rivera said fixing the issue can be straightforward. Most people on the list have to fill out a new application and update the required information.

That deadline is today, and fixing the issue will make sure voters have the offices on their ballot that line up with their precincts.

KSAT recently spoke with Michelle Carew, Bexar County elections administrator to clear up confusion.

For newly eligible voters, the chance to participate can feel empowering.

“I feel like since I can be able to vote now, I can use my leverage and my free will to vote who I feel is right to represent our state,” said Ali Fletcher, a first-time voter and UIW student.

Rosa Maria Cortes, also voting for the first time, said participation matters because it gives young voters a voice in what comes next.

“I think it’s definitely important because now I’m able to have a voice to vote for the future,” Cortes said.

Turnout in Bexar County has varied sharply depending on the election.

In the November 2022 midterms, around 1,230,00 voters were registered and 543,000 ballots were casted — a turnout of around 44%, according to the Bexar County Elections Department.

Students said immigration and affordability are issues that peak their interest and hope those issues will increase turnout.

Voters can check their registration at votetexas.gov.
